Urgent Call for Effective Emergency Alert System in Bahía Blanca

The national senator of the UCR, Maximiliano Abad, has urged the national government to implement the Early Warning System for disasters that was established in 2018 throughout the country. Abad believes that in situations of tragedy and catastrophe, immediate communication between citizens and authorities through geolocated mobile messaging is essential.

Abad emphasizes that early warning systems are crucial for minimizing human losses, damage to infrastructure, and economic consequences. He underscores that telecommunications companies have the obligation to guarantee service, including free access for users, in coordination with the state that declares the emergency.

Last November, the senator presented a bill demanding compliance with Resolution 51/2018 from Enacom, which establishes the obligations of telephone companies in emergency cases. Abad insists on the importance of complying with this regulation and points out that every minute counts in critical situations.

Abad also highlights the lack of coordination between service providers and Enacom in the effective implementation of the Early Warning System. He hopes that tragedies like the one in Bahía Blanca will encourage all actors to collaborate to properly launch this system.

Currently, there are organizations such as the National Meteorological Service and the National Institute of Seismic Prevention that collect critical data on natural phenomena, but there is a lack of an efficient and geolocated mechanism to alert the population in real time in case of an emergency, such as storms or wildfires.
